The Truth from a 6’7″ Man

Yo Melissa,
Okay, so I bought some alligator jerky at a roadside pick-up truck stand in the middle of a swamp near Yeehaw Junction FL.( Alright, the guy was originally from New York.) I’ll have you know that I have never braked for roadkill and removed any fur or tails.

I have only once stopped at a roadside spring and offered my grandkids a drink. (Once they both declined and recently one offered to get everyone a drink.)

I have only once taken friends from Taxachusetts looking for moose and been unsuccessful. The blue tour bus people found us entertaining. (We were experiencing Keilbasa and Moxie over a homemade charcoal fire. Always a sure winner to draw in moose, except that one time.)

And I have gotten your father into epic fishing debacles only twice. So cut me some slack, already!

Love,
Papa
P.S. The jerky is excellent

He failed to tell you that the “Searching for Moose” was over two days and that he had promised to “call one out of the woods”. Thankfully, another Maine friend did take us to finally see a Maine Moose, but that of course was a full two years from our moose hunting with Alan. And he did make Mike drink Moxie!

The Taxachusetts people are very patient even though we were dangerously low on gas. They were great hosts for a bluegrass sing-a-long this week-end in Levy county, FL

No fish in Cold Stream today! About 12 degrees and sunny. It took quite a while to warm up the camp. A camp that was built by Sarah’s great-grandmother in 1927. Right after her great-grandfather passed away. She raised three daughters and numerous state foster chidren by keeping the camp for hunters and fishermen. She made breakfast and dinner around the dining room table and put-up lunches for as many as 5 sports at a time. I can remember several ” uncles” who would still come to hunt or fish for a week at a time into the sixties. Quite a legacy for our family to remember.

Here we are back in sunny Florida! Warm days and comfortable nights. No fires to build. No snow to shovel. Lots of streets to walk or bike. We can go to the beach today. Hit some golf balls. Umpire a ball game. Go fishing.

Just finished a doubleheader. Games 30 and 31. #32 tonight. Very hot(88). Lots of miscues and errors. Players are tired, but returning north over the week-end. Ga-ga and Papa are chomping at the bit to be off for the cold northeast also. I’ve only been hit four or five times hard so far.

I drove to the Tree Farm this morning on my 4-wheeler. Got stuck in the snow and had to use the old 3rd class lever trick to get out. I cut a 16 ft. spruce pole and a 2 ft. fulcrum. I then lifted the 4-wheeler up and kicked snow under the wheels to lift it out of the hole. I repeated this with the front end and then backed up onto dry land. I was only able to go a few hundred feet beyond this, so I walked for about a mile on the road checking cuverts for blockage and wash-outs. When I got back to the ATV , I drove out the road until the machine quit and I had to walk the rest of the way to my truck carrying my chain saw and gas can. The next day I went back and of course the 4-wheeler started right up. I’m still not sure of the reason, but the Lord knows. ” In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God”

Cold Stream is clear of ice! Nice out on the deck this morning. Spring is the promise of the Lord. It always returns and fills the air with warmth and fresh smells of our childhood.

Two little sets of feet running wild in the house. How do you mothers have enough energy to keep up. I’m exhausted after just a few days. They are precious noises though and I will miss them in a couple of days.

I made some new jerky over the weekend. Isn’t Tim Tebow fun to watch? I was impressed with the comments of his teammates. The unsaved ones talked about how he lived out his faith even under pressure situations.
    Amen

I miss my kids and grandkids. Its only been 48 hours. The seven grandchidren are a delightful, noisy, and energetic change from the normal quiet routine. Chris and Melissa, Zech and Allison, God-bless you for blessing us. Grammy and Papa
